Location:- Trivandrum

Vellayani Lake or better known as Vellayani Kayal in local language is the largest fresh water lake in Trivandrum. It is located at a distance of 7 km from Kovalam and is extensively used for drinking and irrigation purposes. Till 1953, it was used only to grow lotus flowers for the Sri Padmanabha Swamy temple. The lake is a major attraction among the visitors and those who visit Kovalam can’t afford to miss an opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view of Vellayani Lake. The crystal clear calm water especially during the moonlit nights allures the visitors to enjoy the splendor of the lake. As the rays of the moon are reflected from the surface of the placid water of lake draw magnificent visuals in the mind of its visitors which is an unforgettable experience for them. The major attraction of Vellayani Lake is boat race that takes place during the time of Onam. Two pilgrimage centers near the banks of the lake namely the Vellayani Vishnu Temple and Vellayani Devi temple are also must visit sites of Vellayani Lake. Country boat service is available from Kovalam beach to reach the lake.

Best time to visit:- Best time to visit Vellayani Lake is during the time of Onam in July- August depending upon the festival time.

How to reach:-

By Air:- Nearest airport to the Vellayani Lake is Thiruvananthapuram International airport.

By Rail:- To reach Vellayani Lake travel 10 km southward starting from Thiruvananthapuram central bus terminal or central railway station.
