
Sprawling across the area of 90 sq. km Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located 18 km north of Marayoor on SH 17 in the Idukki district of Kerala. It is unique protected areas due to its ecological, floral, topographical and cultural significance. The habitat types in the sanctuary ranges from high altitude shoal grasslands to dry thorny scrub. The sanctuary is contagious to Eravikulam National Park to the south, Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary of Tamil Nadu to its north and Kodaikanal wildlife sanctuary to its east. Thus the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary forms the total protected area of 1,187 sq km that comprises Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is under the consideration by the UNESCO world heritage sites.
The main sources of water in the sanctuary include the Chinnar and Pambar Rivers. There are 11 tribal settlements inside the national park with the main inhabitants of Muthuvas and Pulayars tribes. Cultivation of maize, ragi and lemongrass is practices in these settlements. The animal reserve has 34 species of mammals, 245 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles, 22 species of amphibians and 42 species of fishes.
