Neyyar Wildlife sanctuary
Spreading across the area of 128 sq km Neyyar Dam and wildlife sanctuary is one of the most frequently wildlife reserves of Kerala. Nestled in the southeast corner of Western Ghats the Neyyar Sanctuary is the drainage basin of Neyyar River and its tributaries Named Mullayar and Kallar. The sanctuary has vegetation from tropical wet evergreen forests to grasslands. It was declared as animal reserve in 1958 and not much done for it until 1985. Now Government has taken appropriate steps for animal conservation. The towering peak of Agasthyamalai at an elevation of 1868 m is the prominent landmark of Neyyar wildlife sanctuary.
The animal reserve provide shelter to wide variety of birds and animals that include 39 species of mammals, 176 species of birds, 17 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes. A crocodile farm set up in 1977 at Neyyar wildlife sanctuary is a home to Mugger crocodiles. To promote their growth and number The Steve Irwin Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research centre was also inaugurated in the sanctuary in May 2007.
