Parambikulam Wildlife sanctuary
The panoramic Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary is located in the Chittoor taluk of Palakkad district of Kerala. The beautiful landscape is adorned with meandering streams, extensive water spread of reservoir , gushing waterfalls, rolling hills which make it one of the sought after tourist destinations on Kerala wildlife tours. Sprawling across the area of 285 sq km the sanctuary was established in 1973. It is in the Sungam ranges of hills between the Anaimalai and Nelliampathy hills. It is also under the consideration of UNESCO world heritage sites. The sanctuary is also a home to four different indigenous tribes includes the Kadar, Malasar, Muduvar and Mala Malasar.
The Parambikulam Wildlife sanctuary acts as a home to several endangered species of birds and animals that include 408 species of flowering plants, 36 species of mammals, 268 species of birds, 61 species of reptiles , 16 species of amphibians and 47 species of fishes and 1049 species of insects. Popularly known as Nature’s own abode there are three dams that have been built here under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project and the reservoirs harvesting the variety of flora and fauna of the sanctuary.
