
Established in the year of 1950 as a sanctuary and later in 1978 as a tiger reserve Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is situated in the high mountains of the Western Ghats in Kerala along the border with Tamil Nadu. Spreading across the area of 925 sq km the park lies in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta. Out of 925 sq km the 350 sq km part of the core zone was made into Periyar National Park and Tiger reserve. As the park is located in Idukki district it is also famous by the name of Thekkady National park. The animal reserve is famous for elephants. People often see the herds of elephant playing in the water lakes of the animal reserve. There artea about 900-1000 elephants found in the park. Apart from them the park is also a home to estimated 53 tigers 320 species of birds, 45 varieties of reptiles, 27 kinds of amphibians, 160 types of insects and 38 varieties of fishes. The major center of attraction of Periyar National park is 5,500 hectares Periyar Lake. The forests are tropical a mixture of deciduous semi, evergreen and evergreen Sholas characterized by tall trees and closed canopy.

By Road:-There are direct bus links from Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin, Kottayam, Munnar and Madurai that connect to the Periyar wildlife Sanctuary.
