
Also famous by the name of Salim Ali bird sanctuary the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary came into existence in 1983. It is the richest bird habitat in peninsular India located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of Periyar River. Its close vicinity to the Munnar makes it one of the most visited bird sanctuary. It attracts the nature lovers especially the bird watchers in droves. Now a day much of the forest area has been diverted and cultivated into teak and Mahogany plantations but what ever the land is left it offer the glimpses of spectacular bird diversity.
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary has wide array of animals that include 34 species of mammals, 270 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 15 species of amphibians and 47 species of fishes. The vegetation in this area consists of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and plantations of teak, rosewood, mahogany etc,
