
Located at a distance of 5 km East of Thiruvalla on the banks of River Manimala is the Kaviyoor Trikkukkudi Cave Temple. It is one of the oldest Temples of Kerala with the rare architecture bearing a great resemblance to the Pallava style. The temples were constructed from 608 to 850 AD. This rock cut temple is carved on the huge rock and the carved rooms and sculptors are very well preserved by the Archaeological Department of Kerala. The Kaviyoor is famous for its temples with the engravings which are the specimen of stone sculptures in Kerala. The temple has a verandah with a sculpture of Lord Ganesha carved into the wall. An inner sanctum is adorned with a tall Shivalinga which are all carved out on a huge rock and is about three feet in height. The shrine also has the idols of Maharshi and Dwarapalakas. According to a popular belief the ghosts of Lord Shiva constructed the Cave Temple.
Another noted shrine of the Kaviyoor Trikkukkudi Cave Temple is a Hanuman Temple which stands on a small hillock and is built in the gable style architecture which is peculiar to Kerala. Nearest Airport to reach these cave temples is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is about 119 km from Pathanamthitta and the nearest railway station is at Thiruvalla which is about 5 km from Kaviyoor.
