
The well known Teak Museum is located in the Nilambur in the Malappuram district of Kerala which is one of the major attractions among the visitors. Regarded as the first of its kind in the world and the only one in India, the museum is a store house that treasures the historical, visual and scientific aspects of teak plant. The museum was established on the campus of the Sub-centre of Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in the year 1995.The teak plantations are raised in Nilambur way back in 1840 in order to supply of Teak Timber to the British. Two storied museum building offer its guests a series of interesting paintings portraying the tree falling operations , a collection of photographs on the phonological events of teak at different seasons, traditional harvesting tools and wood samples of the different ages and parts of the plant are few of them. The portraits of great figures who have carved a milestone in the successful implementation of the teak plantations and their perspective of glorious era spanning about 150 years also amazed the visitors. The museum has a world class library and a mini auditorium for audio-visual presentations so that the visitors can get valuable information from them. The 800 m long bio-resources nature trail on the museum campus is also very interesting as it passes through heavy growth of shrubs, trees and bamboos. One can even find various species of birds and reptiles along with various near to extinct species of trees of the Western Ghats planted on this natural trail. A Medicinal plant garden consisting of about 150 medicinal plants is also a major attraction among the tourists. Apart from teak, the museum has a collection of about 300 butterflies, moth and insects that are found in teak plantations. A section of the museum displays various physical disorders, diseases and pests that are found in teak plants is one of its kind. A visit to Teak Museum is one of its kinds for the visitors. The nearest Airport to the Teak museum is Karipur Internationsl Airport which is 36 km from Malappuram and the nearest rail head is at Nilabur which is 3 km from the Teak Museum
